Built Environment
Due to an ever-rising population, the world is faced with increasing pressure to develop new urban environments, which provide both high living standards and minimal environmental impact. In collaboration with leading civil engineering companies, the University is applying systems engineering techniques to low-carbon urban design projects, such as the exemplar Dongtan eco-city in China. This is supported by the development of energy-efficient building design and construction techniques, minimising the use of scarce resources. Expertise in urban policy is being used to inform government on potential solutions to problems such as affordable housing and fuel poverty. The structural integrity of ageing infrastructure is of growing concern and engineers are developing health and condition monitoring systems for ensuring optimised maintenance scheduling and safe in-service lifetimes.
