MSc by research

Programme structure

Each year we take a small number of students onto our MSc by Research programme. As a student, you will be placed in one of our research labs to do a ten-month research project. The head of this lab will act as your supervisor and direct your project. You will also be assigned another member of staff as a co-assessor, who will monitor the progress of your research training.

This course is ideal if you already have a significant knowledge of your subject at undergraduate level, and are now looking to learn research techniques in a real lab environment. There is no taught component to this course, although you will receive formal training in research-related skills such as scientific writing and presenting your work in public. At the end of the ten-month project, you will be expected to write a thesis on your studies and to defend this in a viva examination.

How to apply

You can apply for MSc by Research at any time of the year and the application process is similar to that of a PhD application. Before applying, you must identify a supervisor and then contact them directly with your enquiry. If the supervisor is interested in pursuing your proposal, they will provide you with further instructions on how to complete your application.
