Former student
MA in Film and Television Production

Before coming to Bristol I had studied a BA in Cinema, Television and Photography at Leeds, the course was mainly Theory focused with a small practical element included.

“I came to hear about Bristol, and about the details of this programme, through research on the internet. I chose to study at Bristol because I wanted to continue my studies at a prestigious establishment that offered an MA course with an intensive practical element. The course at Bristol offered an intensive and practical foundation in core skills and processes of single camera screen production, supported by critical discussion and contact with industry professionals. This has helped to enhance the technical skills I needed for single camera productions, placing me in a constantly demanding and challenging environment. As the practical work is both individual and collaborative and consists of a series of structured projects and productions it has given me the opportunity to interact and work with similarly motivated students, contributing my ideas and time to their productions and establishing group cohesion and teamwork, which are significant elements to the framework of the film industry.

“There are many interesting units that you can choose from in semester 2 such as Directing, Cinematography, Writing, Producing and Design. All of these units offer a fun practical experience and introduce you to the fundamental elements that it takes to make a film.

“Bristol’s fees – unlike those at many other universities - covers not only teaching and resources, but all production expenses and materials. This was key to me, because I needed to be sure when I enrolled on the programme that there were no hidden costs that could have a detrimental financial effect on me completing the course.

“I have always had a desire to play American Football but had never had the opportunity to join a team. This desire became a reality when I came to Bristol because the university has its own team, The Bristol Barracudas; I went for trial and was picked to play in their first team. Everyone was friendly and I was made to feel part of an extended family from day 1. The experience was awesome and one that I will treasure for a long time, it has also provided a great social life.

“My message to other students who are considering taking this course is: If you love Film and Television and are prepared to work hard to take your skills to the next level, then this is the course for you.”
