In an age that is frequently defined as post-national and mobile, it is surprising that fewer students are drawn towards the study of Modern Languages within the UK. The talk addresses this question by examining the relevance of the study of languages and cultures in a world increasingly defined by the pace of globalization. Researchers and students will give a series of short presentations on why languages matter and what the study of other languages and cultures tells us about the experience of being human. Among the issues that we will address is how Modern Languages has moved beyond the study of separate nation states to examine how languages and cultures operate and interact across diverse points of connection. We will look at how translation is everywhere in British culture today, from Google Translate and the apps we use on holiday, and how without understanding other cultures we risk diminishing our ability to understand ourselves.

This event is part of InsideArts festival 2015.
