Screening and discussion: Meek's Cutoff (Kelly Reichardt, 2010)

18 November 2015, 5.00 PM - 18 November 2015, 8.00 PM

Pete Falconer, Jenny Barrett and Timothy Hughes

Winston Theatre, Richmond Building, 105 Queens Road, Bristol, BS8 1LN

The film, widely described as a 'revisionist' or 'feminist' Western, depicts the difficulties faced by a wagon train of settlers crossing the Oregon high desert in 1845, with an emphasis on the experiences of the women in the group. The screening will be followed by a discussion between Dr Pete Falconer (University of Bristol), Dr Jenny Barrett (Edge Hill University) and Mr Timothy Hughes (Royal Holloway, University of London). The film will be discussed in relation to the contemporary state of the Western genre and how it has been used and understood in recent years, as a particular intervention into the genre by a distinctive female filmmaker, and in relation to a number of other historical and cultural contexts. The discussion will then be opened up to questions and comments from the audience.
