Jane Lumley’s Iphigenia: A Script-in-Hand Performance
Wickham Theatre Cantock's Close Bristol BS8 1UP
Believed to have been written in 1554, Jane Lumley’s Iphigenia is the first translation of Euripides’s play into English and the oldest surviving work of English drama by a woman. The Iphigenia Project examines Jane Lumley’s remarkable play through performance practice and features two public performances. This first event is the culmination of a short research and development process, exploring the role of the chorus in Lumley’s dramaturgy. Professional actors will join students from the university to deliver a script-in-hand reading of Lumley’s play. This rare opportunity to see Lumley’s work in performance is kindly supported by the Institute of Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition and is part of the celebrations to mark the Department of Theatre’s 75th Anniversary.
