Our charitable status and fundraising promise

The University of Bristol is dedicated to treating its donors with the highest level of care and respect.

Your philanthropic gifts help to support the University's mission to advance higher education and research and sustain academic freedom.

Your generosity enables intellectual curiosity to thrive, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and leading to breakthroughs that can benefit us all.

Your support also helps to ensure that Bristol continues to flourish as a world leading research intensive university.

Our commitment to you

How your gift will be used

Every penny of your donation will be spent on the area(s) you have chosen to support. The Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) is wholly funded centrally by the University, and our fundraisers do not receive any form of commission related to your gift.

The University will always seek to comply with its legal and regulatory obligations in relation to how we use your philanthropic gift.

However, the strategic priorities of the University do change over periods of time and this may affect how philanthropic funds are used in the future.

If these changes mean it is not possible for the University to apply your donation for the purpose for which it was originally given, it will comply with the terms of any gift agreement with you and its legal and regulatory obligations in determining a suitable alternative use for the funds which respects your original wishes, so far as reasonably possible.

We will also seek to discuss these changes with the donor(s) or with their family where it is reasonably practicable.

We will update you on the impact of your gift

We are proud of our donors and the big difference they make. We look forward to keeping you informed and updated on the impact of your philanthropy.

We will respect your privacy

We respect and honour our donors' rights to privacy, and will fully comply with your requests on how you wish to be contacted by the University.

We will appropriately acknowledge, recognise and publicise donations according to your wishes, and respect your desire for anonymity where requested.

We will handle your data responsibly

We will store all of your personal information securely, and will fully comply with all relevant data protection legislation as detailed in our Data Protection Statement.

We will act with transparency

We will always encourage you to seek independent advice if we have any reason to believe that a proposed gift might significantly or negatively affect your financial or tax position or relationship with other family members.

The University’s most recent published financial accounts and other relevant financial information will be made available online in an easily accessible format.

We will be here to help

We are available if you need to contact us with any concerns about your philanthropic support for the University.

We aim to resolve your concerns, but should you feel it necessary there is recourse to the DARO Complaints Policy.
