With 1 in 5 young people not in employment, education or training and a quarter of a million unemployed for over a year, the Commission says youth unemployment is not only one of the greatest challenges facing the country in human terms, but is also a £28bn timebomb under the nation’s finances.

Mergers are unlikely to be the most effective way of dealing with poorly performing NHS hospitals, according to new research from the Centre for Market and Public Organisation (CMPO). The study by Professor Carol Propper and colleagues finds that the wave of hospital consolidation in the late 1990s and early 2000s – in which around half the acute hospitals in England were involved in a merger – brought few benefits.

Their research has shown that children who sit high stakes examinations during major football tournaments perform worse than if they sat them in a football-free summer.

ESRC Scholarships

The Accounting and Finance Department is recognized by the ESRC for postgraduate training. This means that students who wish to study for postgraduate degrees in the department can potentially apply for ESRC scholarships.
