Stepping into Leadership
Aimed at: aspiring academic leaders from any of the three pathways (Grades J and K) who are either becoming independent researchers and starting to build a team and/or who are starting to manage others within teaching-related roles. For more information see the leadership programmes page.
Content: Stepping into Leadership will introduce skills for managing difficult conversations, negotiating and influencing others and communicating effectively, and will help you to recognise your own leadership style and how you can build an effective team from the very start.
How to apply: Request an application form here.
How long: over three months you will participate in four one-day workshops and three half-day action learning sets.
When: late January 2018 to early May 2018.
Teaching @Bristol for research staff
Academic Staff Development are running half day sessions designed for research staff who are currently engaged in teaching as part of their role at the University of Bristol or looking to take on university teaching. These sessions give you an opportunity to review your teaching practice across lecturing and small group teaching through identifying areas of good practice and exploring a range of teaching strategies to engage and enhance the student learning experience
Aimed at: researchers currently engaged in teaching as part of their role or for those looking to start university teaching.
Content: two courses; Small Group Teaching or Lecturing. You can elect to do both.

How long: both courses are three hours long.
CREATE: Cultivating Research and Teaching Excellence
This is the University of Bristol's continuing professional development scheme for academics. Each level leads to national recognition with the Higher Education Academy, aligned to the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).
Aimed at: aspiring Lecturers or Senior Lecturers.
Content: Level 1 is comprised of seven modules. Modules of particular relevance would be:

How long: levels 1 & 2 take eight months each.
When: start dates correspond to University teaching blocks. For Level 1 participants will need to secure a minimum of 15 contact hours (not including office hours, tutorials or research supervision). For Level 2 there is a minimum 20 contact hours (as Level 1 except for Level 2 this can include up to 5 hours of research supervision of PhD/Masters/UG students).

Bristol Clear
Bristol Clear provides development provision for all pathway 2 research staff at the University of Bristol.

GW4 Opportunities
Access to select research-related training development at the GW4 universities; Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff. Find out more on the GW4 website.
GW4 Crucible
Through a series of workshops, talks, and activities participants are given the opportunity to engage with a variety of research-related ideas. Each cohort tackles a different theme. There is strong competition for places. Applications are made in November and selected candidates are notified in January. If chosen, you would need to commit to two days per month in Feb, March and April and one day in May, which is the final month. Find out more on the GW4 Crucible webpages.
