Cancer Endocrinology Group – Public and Patient Involvement

The Cancer Endocrinology Group is committed to involving patients and the public in our research in a meaningful way. Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) means working in partnership with people who have personal or shared experience of cancer, or a strong interest in cancer research, to help shape our research priorities, approaches, and overall impact. Our research focuses on understanding how endocrine (hormone) pathways influence how cancer develops and progresses. This knowledge is used to improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for people affected by cancer. Meaningful PPI helps ensure that our laboratory research remains relevant, responsible, and aligned with the needs and priorities of patients.

What does our PPI group do?

Members of our PPI group help us by:

  • Providing feedback on research ideas and priorities
  • Advising on how our research questions and outcomes may matter to patients and the public
  • Helping us communicate our research more clearly and accessibly

PPI contributors do not need scientific or medical training. We value lived experience, insight, and different perspectives.

How are contributors involved?

Involvement is flexible and may include:

  • Occasional emails requesting feedback
  • Online or in-person discussion meetings (typically 1–3 engagements per year)
  • Reviewing short documents in plain English

We aim to make involvement accessible, respectful, and supportive.

Why PPI matters to our research

By involving patients and the public, we can:

  • Ask better, more relevant research questions
  • Improve how our research is explained and shared
  • Strengthen funding applications and research impact
  • Increase the likelihood that our work will translate into real-world benefit
