Chemistry is the study of the structure, properties and synthesis of matter. It informs everything, from developing new pharmaceuticals that will help fight disease, to arresting climate change.

Your studies could encompass fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, and applications in analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry. This includes the Dynamic Laboratory Manual, which will enhance your laboratory experience by enabling you to prepare for, participate in and learn from practical classes in a unique way.

What kind of student would this course suit?
Anyone with a love and fascination for chemistry and who has excellent A-level (or equivalent) performance in Chemistry and Maths will enjoy these degree programmes.
Those without a science background but with a passion for chemistry would be suited to the BSc Chemistry with a Preliminary Year of Study.
How is this course taught and assessed?
The course is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials and small-group teaching as well as practical classes.
The practical aspects of the course are supported by our unique dynamic laboratory manual, eBiolabs, which is used to inform and test your ability to prepare for and carry out experiments in the teaching laboratory.
The majority of assessment is carried out by written examinations for each year of the degree and continually assessed lab and project work.
Practical and written examination assessments in the second, third and fourth years contribute to the overall degree mark.
What are my career prospects?
Chemists are employed throughout the science industry and in teaching for their technical knowledge and expert understanding. Beyond this, employers in financial services, management, government and many more areas value the transferable skills that chemists possess, such as numeracy, communication skills and problem solving. Graduates may also go on to further study at PhD level before pursuing their career.
