MSc Engineering with Artificial Intelligence
- MSc
Overview
The integration of AI-driven technologies into traditional engineering sectors presents challenges, particularly in recruiting engineers with both sector-specific and AI knowledge.
The MSc in Engineering with Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a one-year full-time postgraduate taught programme designed to equip students from traditional engineering backgrounds and related disciplines with the skills and knowledge to apply artificial intelligence in engineering.
You will take three core units covering the foundations and applications of AI. These units will cover the necessary programming skills, an introduction to machine learning models, and the use of industry-standard AI infrastructure.
In addition, you will complete three specialised units focusing on different aspects of AI in engineering, covering AI usage in engineering applications, AI technologies commonly used in engineering, and the impact of AI on society.
You will finish your study with a multi-disciplinary research project in one of a wide range of application areas. This will be an industry-directed group project aligned with a relevant engineering discipline.
The programme is designed to address real-world challenges while building your practical AI skills, enabling you to continue working in your core engineering discipline equipped with AI expertise.
The University of Bristol is the host of the Isambard-AI, the UK's most powerful AI supercomputer ranked 11th fastest in the world. It is a national facility for AI research and is designed to help solve some of the biggest problems in the world today with AI. Students on this programme can apply for access to compute time on Isambard-AI to support their projects, subject to approval.
This programme will be taught at our cutting-edge Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, where enhanced links with businesses will provide you with real-world knowledge, networks and skills to succeed once you graduate.
Programme structure
Teaching Block 1 (TB1)
Teaching Block 1 (TB1), shared with MSc in Artificial Intelligence, focuses on providing intensive training in programming, statistics, AI and cloud computing.
In TB1, you will take either Software Development: Programming and Algorithms, or, if you already have software development skills, Statistical Computing. The remainder of TB1 consists of the following units:
- Foundations of AI for STEM Students
- Large-Scale Data Engineering.
Teaching Block 2 (TB2)
Teaching Block 2 (TB2) moves to focus on AI in Engineering applications.
In TB2, you will take the following mandatory units:
- Introduction to AI Societies, Ethics and Futures
- AI in Engineering Practice
- AI Driven Simulation and Design.
Group project
You will finish your MSc with a dynamic, industry-directed group project. This experience challenges you to apply the advanced concepts from the course and your unique expertise to solve a real-world problem.
The programme will be delivered using a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and independent and group research. Units will be assessed using a combination of written exams, coursework assignments, and project work (for the final project).

Entry requirements
You will typically need an upper second-class honours degree or an international equivalent in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or Computing (including Computer Science or Data Science).
We will consider your application if your interim grades are currently slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements and may make you an aspirational offer. This offer would be at the standard level, so you would need to achieve the standard entry requirements by the end of your degree.
We will also consider your application if your final overall achieved grade is slightly lower than the programme's entry requirement.
If your achieved grade is lower than our entry requirements, your application may be more likely to receive an offer if you have additional relevant work experience or qualifications. If you have at least one of the following, please include your CV (curriculum vitae/résumé) when you apply, showing:
- evidence of relevant work experience (minimum of three years) in the following sectors: Engineering (all), Manufacturing, Energy and utilities, Transport, Infrastructure and construction, Environmental, Sustainability and Defence
- a relevant postgraduate qualification.
See international equivalent qualifications on the International Office website.
Read the programme admissions statement for important information on entry requirements, the application process and supporting documents required.
If English is not your first language, you will need to reach the requirements outlined in our profile level C.
