The students were taking part in a study abroad programme in Bonn, Germany. As part of the programme, the students are taking a course on gambling in society and visited the UK to learn more about gambling harms research and treatment.
We had a fantastic day of talks and activities which included Hub Co-Director, Professor Agnes Nairn, leading a seminar on international perspectives of gambling and gambling related harm and Co-Director, Professor Sharon Collard, talking about the financial perspectives. Hub researchers Dr Raffaello Rossi and Dr Jamie Wheaton presented a session on gambling marketing in sports, highlighting the prevalence of gambling marketing in NHL and NBA games. We learnt about loot boxes and the journey from game mechanics to gambling from Maria Sameen from Bristol Cyber Security Group and local treatment providers, ARA Recovery4all, led an interactive session highlighting gambling risk factors and signs in student populations.
The students had the opportunity to present their learning and gave some fascinating presentations on topics like 'The influence of gambling in the world of sports' and 'Sports betting for college athletes.' It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the gambling harms research happening at Bristol and to foster international links.
