Loraine McIlree, Aegis Professor of Aerospace Strategy
Loraine McIlree is a homegrown Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Bristol. The majority of her career has been with Airbus where she has built a deep technical expertise across Landing Gear, Airworthiness, Certification and Fuel Systems, delivering award-winning results and driving meaningful innovation.
Now serving as Head of Strategy, Business Development & Commercial Sales, Loraine has defined and implemented a new site strategy that underpins sustainable business growth and industrial transformation.
As a technical team leader, Loraine played a pivotal role in securing a successful 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) flight on an A330 aircraft—an achievement recognised with a prestigious Silver Team Award from the Royal Aeronautical Society. She also led a transnational team on the A380 Fuel Systems programme, introducing advanced fuel pump technology to enhance performance and reliability.
A passionate advocate for people and progress, Loraine is a committed mentor, supporting colleagues in their career development and professional chartership. For more than 20 years, she has actively championed STEM engagement in schools and colleges, inspiring the next generation of engineers.
Loraine is delighted to return to the University of Bristol as an Aegis Professor. She is passionate about strengthening the bridge between industry and academia, supporting applied research, and helping students develop the technical depth, commercial awareness and professional confidence.
