Bryn Roberts, Aegis Professor of Digital Health
Bryn is the Aegis Professor of Digital Health, a joint faculty appointment between Science & Engineering and Health & Life Sciences.
In his role as Global Head of Data, Analytics & Research at Roche, Bryn’s accountabilities span the Diagnostics and Digital Health businesses and include data strategy, data engineering, data science and AI, with a particular focus on research and innovation for healthcare information solutions and digital health products.
Bryn gained his BSc and PhD in pharmacology from the University of Bristol and, following post-doctoral work in neuropharmacology and molecular biology, he commenced a career in the pharmaceutical industry at Organon. During subsequent roles at Zeneca and AstraZeneca, his research interests expanded to include high-throughput scientific methods and automation, informatics and data science. In 2006 Bryn relocated to Switzerland and joined Roche Pharma Research as Informatics Site Head in Basel and Global Head of Scientific Methods and Algorithm Development. For a decade Bryn was the Global Head of Operations and Informatics for Roche Pharma Research & Early Development, before moving to the Diagnostics Division to help establish a new digital health business, Roche Information Solutions, overseeing the data and analytics capabilities and the research and early development portfolio.
Beyond Roche, in addition to his Aegis Professorship, Bryn is a Bynum Tudor Fellow at Kellogg College, University of Oxford. He is a member of the Swiss Science Council and sits on several advisory boards, including the University of Oxford Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Approaches to Biomedical Science, the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics and the University of Edinburgh Centre for Doctoral Training in Biomedical AI. Bryn is a non-executive director on the board of ChemAI.
In his role as the Aegis Professor of Digital Health, Bryn advises the faculties on emerging trends and innovations in the healthcare and life science sectors, particularly with regard to digital transformation, healthcare data, AI, personalized medicine and remote patient monitoring. He contributes to University and faculty strategies to ensure that the mission, research and teaching in Bristol are future-oriented and deliver maximum value to students and society. Bryn supports staff and students through teaching, coaching, mentorship and collaborative research projects.
