Facilities

At the heart of the Smart Internet Lab is one of the UK’s most advanced network test environments, a unique platform where pioneering research meets real-world application.

A national test environment for future networks

The University of Bristol’s Test Network builds on the national 5GUK Testbeds and Trials Programme and drives innovation through UK and EU-funded projects.

It provides a multi-tenancy cloud infrastructure that enables researchers and industry partners to co-develop, test and validate next-generation connectivity solutions.

The testbed combines proprietary and open-source technologies across multi-vendor systems. Its cloud core, based in the Merchant Venturers Building, connects to multiple edge nodes across Bristol using licensed and unlicensed spectrum as well as SDN-enabled fibre networks.

The result? A dynamic environment for rapid experimentation and deployment.

Driving research and collaboration

Our research focuses on the following areas:

  • programmable and open radio networks (Open-RAN)
  • network slicing and orchestration using SDN and OSM
  • AI-driven automation and zero-touch networking
  • quantum communications and secure networking
  • sustainable, energy-efficient network design.

The Nomadic Node

Complementing this infrastructure is the Nomadic Node, a portable “5G-in-a-box” solution. It delivers rapid, flexible coverage and supports edge computing, IoT applications and machine learning-driven orchestration.

The Nomadic Node allows testing and demonstration of advanced use cases in cities, manufacturing, logistics and smart environments.

Collaboration at national and international scale

The Smart Internet Lab extends its reach nationally and internationally through the JOINER platform. This open experimental environment supports large-scale future network research, development and innovation.

JOINER brings together:

  • universities, corporates, spinouts, start-ups, SMEs and government bodies to address complex connectivity challenges
  • end-to-end system solutions across automation, telco cloud, security, spectrum and non-terrestrial networks powered by emerging AI
  • real-world testing environments that close the gap between research and market deployment.

Creating a living ecosystem for innovation

Together, the Smart Internet Lab facilities create a living ecosystem for innovation. They move ideas from concept to the real world.

Researchers gain access to cutting-edge labs, networks and national-scale infrastructure, positioning Bristol at the forefront of the UK’s future networks.
