The core focus of his research is the application of multi-element antenna systems (also known as Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) or Smart Antennas) to enhance the performance of wireless systems in terms of higher data rates, whilst conserving both bandwidth and power. Fundamental to the successful design and deployment of such systems is an in-depth understanding of the multi-dimensional wireless channel necessitating joint characterisation of both the antenna elements and the propagation medium. He has established a world-leading multi-channel spatial-temporal measurement and analysis facility at Bristol, with an operational capability only matched by a few research centres across the global, with the outputs driving the channel models associated with the wireless standards for next generation WLANs, WiMax and 4G (3G LTE, ITU Advanced).

Robert J Piechocki is Professor in the School of Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Engineering Maths. His research interests span all areas of connected intelligent systems. His domain expertise is Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV), and wireless sensing for eHealth. He has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences and holds 13 patents in these areas. Robert is leading wireless connectivity and sensing research activities for the IRC SPHERE project (winner of 2016 World Technology Award). Robert is also a PI for several current high-profile projects in networks, connectivity and sensing funded by industry, Innovate UK and EPSRC such as VENTURER, FLOURISH, NG-CDI, OPERA.

Reza Nejabati is currently a chair professor of intelligent networks and head of the High-Performance Network Research Group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the University of Bristol, UK. He is also a visiting professor and Cisco chair in the Cisco center for Intent Based Networking in the Curtin University, Australia. He has established successful and internationally recognised research activities in “Autonomous and Intent Based Networks,” as well as “Quantum Networks.” His research received the prestigious IEEE Charles Kao Award in 2016 and has done important contributions in 5G, Smart City, Quantum Communication, and Future Internet Experimentation. Building on his research, he co-founded a successful start-up company (Zeetta Networks Ltd). It has currently 25 employees and £6m VC and external funding.

I am a Professor of Quantum Photonics and EPSRC Quantum Technologies Fellow in the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs, in Physics and Electrical and Electronic Engineering. My research interests centre around the use of solid-state quantum emitters that interact with light, for quantum technology applications.

Xenofon Vasilakos is a Lecturer at the University of Bristol, the UK. His research is aligned with Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI) and Smart Internet Lab (SIL). He is currently the lead researcher of the Zero Downtime Edge Application Mobility (ZeroDEAM) project funded by Samsung Electronics UK. He received the MSc degree in Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and the PhD degree in informatics from the Athens University of Economics and Business with a focus on Information-Centric Networking architectures, protocols, and distributed solutions. He has participated in various EU and national funded research projects such as 5GPPP SliceNet and the FIA award-winning FP7 project PURSUIT. His current research interests include 5G and 6G focusing on Multi-access Edge Computing based on cognition approaches inspired by machine learning models towards Zero-touch network and Service Management.

Dr Reiko Vermeulen joined the Professional Services team in June 2022 as the Smart Internet Lab Manager. She will be covering Maria Korea’s maternity leave until June 2023. She leads on all operational aspects of the Lab’s activities and manages a team of research support staff with a focus on developing new strategic activities. Previously, Reiko worked in research development, supporting academic colleagues obtain strategic funding for research, including fellowships and large grants.

Harriet Parks is the Smart Internet Lab Project Coordinator supporting Smart Internet Lab projects and activities. Harriet is also leading on the coordination of the the Smart Internet Lab 2023 Conference along with her job share Aneta Taylor.
