Exploring AI-powered solutions to reduce the impact of gambling adverts on vulnerable audiences
This project explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) towards the minimisation of gambling adverts. Firstly, we will develop an AI-driven application that automatically detects and analyses the prevalence of gambling adverts during sports coverage. Secondly, we will explore the feasibility of an AI-powered tool that can block the visibility of gambling adverts during live sporting coverage by blurring, pixelating or replacing them with alternative imagery. Our research will contribute to evidence of interventions that can inform policy thinking, and eventually offer a way for vulnerable people to watch sports without being constantly exposed to gambling adverts.
The project lead is Dr Jamie Wheaton (School of Geographical Sciences) at the University of Bristol.
