Our Projects
Current research projects being undertaken by CenSoF academics and our partners.
- Caring for futuresUnderstanding and reimagining the embodied, social and material impacts and implications of algorithmic decision making to predict young people’s futures. Interrogating the data, models and algorithms used in an app used in Schools and exploring methods for reparative justice and agent-based modelling.
- Smart living: everyday family life in the digital ageInvestigating how families incorporate technologies in mundane, everyday aspects of home life.
- TV, everyday life and sociodigital futuresExploring how digital devices, data and services are linked to changing practices of watching television, the material and temporal organisation of domestic life, and wider transformations in culture and economy.
- Futures of homeAn exploration of how ‘homes of the future’ are being imagined in the context of digitalisation. How mitigation of/adaptation to climate crises are manifested.
- Museums of the futureExploring how sociodigital futures are curated. Through empirical fieldwork in global futures museums and a symposium of participants drawn from diverse museums/cultural/art institutions.
- Governing futures of EdTechWith a focus on the Department for Education (UK) and school settings, this project explores how AI has become a site of political experimentation involving cross-sector policy networks of AI firms and policy agencies.
- Sociodigital futures of irregularised mobility at the UK borderExploring how sociodigital futures claims influence everyday practices of migrants and border controllers; and a collaborative sociodigital ethnography, (with Border Forensics) investigating deaths in the Channel.
- What is community technology?A longitudinal study of three community anchor organisations working with digital technologies, an action research project on inclusive digital design (using VR), and growth of a national community tech network.
- Futures of work and organisationExploring how global geo-political and technological changes in telecommunications are reshaping work in telecommunications amongst those responsible for implementing, maintaining and managing the critical national infrastructure.
- 6G futuresMapping and modelling emergent 6G architectures and their environmental impact within wider sociodigital futures in the making. In collaboration with BT.
- 3D immersive futuresPrototyping and evaluating the use of 2D and 3D immersive futures for building community capacity in sociodigital futures thinking and action. In collaboration with Locality.
- Swarm robotics for community consensus buildingExploring and evaluating the use of swarm robotics for consensus building and decision making on values and priorities for community sociodigital futures.
- Speculative design briefs exhibitionPublic exhibition of speculative design briefs completed by MA students at the University of the Arts in response to CenSoF research.
- Generating spaces for co-production and co-design across dividesWorking with Locality organisations, this project is developing co-design activities for inclusive sociodigital futures, and curating public exhibitions to engage wider audiences, including policy makers and other change makers.
- Methods for sociodigital futures researchThrough a range of activities, this project is exploring the methodological challenges of sociodigital futures research, and the emergent repertoire of methods that can be deployed.
- Sociodigital futures of qualitative researchBuilding on initial exploration of LLMs/Chatbots to analyse a large qualitative survey dataset, this project considers the wider implications of LLMs/Chatbots for the future of qualitative research.
- Theorizing sociodigital futuresExploring theoretical approaches to sociodigital futures.
