University Research Ethics Committee information
All research ethics applications that do not require an external ethics review should be submitted to the University of Bristol Research Ethics Committee (REC).
The University of Bristol research ethics process underwent a major restructure as of July 2025. Now, instead of the review committees being faculty or school based, the structure is composed of cross-faculty research ethics committees that will bring a broader range of knowledge, perspectives, and experience to their reviews.
You can find a breakdown of the current REC structure here.
Note. At the present time, undergraduate and post-graduate taught ethics applications are still reviewed by their school committees. The new structure for these reviews will be finalised and implemented over the course of the next academic year.
When you submit an ethics application via the Online Research Ethics Management system (OREMS), the initial information that you provide will allow us to assign the project to the appropriate review pathway. (If we need further information to do so, we will contact you.)
The new REC structure will operate on a pre-determined schedule, providing clarity as to when your application will be reviewed. To see the the REC schedule, click here.
