Understanding paper
Different paper types have different textures, finishes and uses. Understand the four main categories of paper and their typical uses.
Paper types
Paper types fall into four categories:
Uncoated paper
- no coating, giving it a rougher and bulkier feel
- usually whiter and ideal for writing on (for example, letterheads)
- commonly used in photocopiers
Silk coated paper
- has a smooth coating with a slight sheen
- less bulky than uncoated paper
- not easy to write on, so not ideal for forms
- coating may cause slight yellowing, making it less white.
Gloss coated paper
- mid-sheen coating for a smooth finish
- less bulky than uncoated and silk coated papers
- difficult to write on, unsuitable for forms
- coating may yellow the paper slightly.
Speciality papers
Special papers are designed for specific needs and include:
Synthetic
Plastic based, waterproof, and tear resistant. To be used only when necessary as it’s less environmentally friendly.
Acetate
Clear plastic paper which is used mainly for wire bound booklet covers. We will usually offer more environmentally friendly options and would encourage you not to use acetate unless necessary.
High gloss
A glossy alternative to acetate, suitable for covers and can be printed on.
Labels
Available in many sizes and stocks (uncoated, coated, synthetic). Labels are easy to peel and ideal for large quantities. They are mostly available on A4 sheets but can be sourced in A3.
Paper weight
Paper weight is measured in grams per square meter (gsm). Generally, a higher gsm means thicker paper, though thickness can vary depending on the paper type. Uncoated papers tend to be thicker than coated papers of the same weight.
Common paper weight ranges
Standard paper: 80 gsm to 150 gsm
Silk coated paper: 90 gsm to 150 gsm
Gloss coated paper: 90 gsm to 170 gsm (170 gsm is usually kept in stock)
Heavier paper
Thicker papers, often referred to as boards, range from 160 gsm to 350 gsm. These are typically used for business cards, covers, and postcards.
Paper weight uses
Different paper weights are suited to a variety of uses. Some examples include:
80 gsm
Ideal for handouts. This weight is the standard paper for all black and white printing.
90 gsm
Used for reports. This is the standard paper for all colour printing.
120 gsm
Ideal for flyers.
200 gsm
High quality flyers or cover pages.
300 gsm
Used for postcards.
350 gsm
Ideal for business cards.
