Laminating
Lamination is used to enhance or protect printed materials. We offer three main types of lamination to suit different needs.
Lamination is the process of applying a thin plastic layer to the printed sheet in order to enhance or protect it. Lamination is commonly used for the cover of a booklet. It’s also used where the printed item could come into contact with moisture or a liquid.
Sizes
We can laminate sizes A6 to A0. We can also laminate bespoke sizes up to 900 mm wide and up to 3 metres in length.
Types of lamination
There are many types of lamination. We offer three categories: matt, gloss and soft touch.
Matt
Matt leaves a non-reflective surface. It gives an elegant and sophisticated finish but can show finger marks quite quickly. An anti-scuff version of matt lamination can be added, but we do not provide this service. We can matt laminate up to A3 in size.
Gloss
This is a high gloss finish which has the effect of sharpening images and increasing contrast. Gloss offers UV protection. Whilst it will be marked easily, it can be wiped clean.
Gloss lamination can be applied to all sizes.
Soft touch
Soft touch is a variant of matt lamination which has a rubbery tactile finish. This is a more expensive process. However, it can be used very creatively to produce a product which is pleasing both visually and to the touch. Soft touch laminating can be applied up to A3 in size.
Alternatives to lamination
Lamination is not environmentally friendly as laminated sheets are difficult (though not impossible) to recycle. If something is going to be used for a long time, adding lamination can help it last longer. This may be better for the environment than reprinting it multiple times.
There are more environmentally friendly alternatives to lamination which should be considered:
High gloss paper
This is a specialist paper which provides a similar end result as a gloss lamination. It also offers some degree of water resistance.
Synthetic
Synthetic paper is made of plastic, but it is almost indestructible, making it suitable for use over many years. The print can also be submerged in water, which is something laminated paper can’t do.
