Study Phases

The RISE study is happening in two geographical areas, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG), and Northamptonshire. It will have five parts:

  1. A systematic review of recent evidence summaries, to compile everything we know about what works to support young people’s mental health outside of clinical services.
  2. A ‘life stories’ project with young adults aged 16-21. Young adults will be recruited who have or who are still experiencing challenging pathways into adulthood. We will invite them to tell us about their experiences, including the support they may have received and the support they felt they needed but did not receive.
  3. Systems workshops with young adults, service providers and parents / trusted adults to identify what changes are needed in the system in both geographical areas. These workshops will be held separately, but then young adults and professionals will come together in an ‘ideas exchange’ meeting, to share thoughts and plans for change.
  4. Evaluation of the changes, to see if they have had a positive impact. For this we will collect survey data measuring young people's mental health and other outcomes, conduct interviews with young people and service providers, and hold more workshops to ask participants how they think the changes will make a difference (something called ‘Ripple Effects mapping’). We will also look at what the changes cost.
  5. Knowledge exchange activities with policy makers to share our findings. We hope that this will lead to changes in other geographical areas, or to new national policy and guidance, so all young people who are at risk of mental health problems and difficult pathways into adulthood can be supported better.
