Beck Richardson - Public Lecture - What can real-life superheroes teach us about recovering from an injury?
Wills Memorial Building - Reception Room
Have you ever injured yourself? Ever cut your finger on a tin of sweetcorn? Been messing about on your bike, fallen off and hit your chin on the curb? Stuck the end of a broken pipette in your hand (great start to my scientific career, right?!)? Or perhaps you’ve been unlucky enough to have a more serious injury. Chances are that injury has healed with a scar. Scars are our bodies incredibly efficient way of recovering from even a serious injury. But do any of your scars itch? Or are they raised? Do they restrict your movement at all? Scars may be a great way of recovering from a serious injury, but their long-term presence can have both physical and emotional effects on us. In this talk we will discuss what scars are, in all their different forms, and consider their good and bad points. I will also introduce you to some real-life superhero friends of mine and describe how they may help us understand how to heal better after an injury.
