Research interests
I am working with Professor Michelle Cini on UK subsidy control policy from a political science/public policy perspective. The research investigatea the drivers of policy change across two dimensions: policy content and policy process. From 1 May 2022 to 30 April 2023, the research tracks the functioning of both the new UK (English, Scottish and Welsh) subsidy control regime, as set out in the UK Subsidy Control Act, and the Northern Irish-EU state aid regime, as set out in the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland and in EU law. In situating UK subsidy control in the wider context of the immediate post-Brexit period, the research contributes to better understanding the extent of regulatory alignment and/or divergence in subsidy control policy, and to the effect of Brexit on UK public policy.
I have previously worked on the Brexit negotiations, the involvement of civil society and interest groups in EU governance in the context of wider debates on participatory and deliberative democracy. I have written extensively on the impact of EU membership on civil society in the new member states from Central and Eastern Europe through the lens of Europeanization. I have worked on the impact of EU enlargement on the institutionalisation of civil society participation in the EU with a focus on the European Economic and Social Committee and the Social Dialogue and the European Union's new civil dialogue.
I welcome enquires from individuals interested in doctoral or post-doctoral research that coincides with my own research interests specifically civil society, lobbying and global governance, EU enlargement, regulatory convergence and divergence and Brexit.
