Biography
I have a degree in Physics from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. My PhD was on light-emission from silicon nanocrystals at the Barcelona Microelectronics Institute (CSIC). In 2009 I joined the University of Birmingham as a Research Fellow and worked on size-selected metallic nanoparticles, atomic-probe characterisation techniques and ultra-fast light-matter interaction processes in semiconductor nanostrctures. I joined the Quantum Photonics group in Bristol in 2012 as a Senior Research Associate and have been leading the effort in low temperature photonics since. In 2016 I became a Lecturer at the Quantum Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training.
Research interests
Dr Barreto is the Director of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Engineering and a Senior Lecturer at the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs. His experience covers applied physics and semiconductor technologies. Currently he is interested in the integration of photonic circuits with single photon detectors, modulators and sources to form optical quantum information processors.

Teaching
I am the unit director for the postgraduate modules of Topics in Quantum Engineering, Quantum Systems Engineering, Individual Project B ad Cohort Project. Before that I taught the units of Quantum Platforms and Nanofabrication for Quantum Technologies. These are all QECDT modules, although some are also offered in the MSc in Optoelectronics and Quantum Technologies degree.
