Research interests
Dr. Bryer's research has focused mainly on the organizing and accounting practices of alternative organizations such as cooperatives and social movements. She sees these organizations as potentially allowing us to draw wider insights about how practices, which may conventionally be exclusionary and oppressive, such as budgeting and performance measurement, can be repurposed to support goals including equality and social inclusion.
Dr Bryer has published work in leading journals in the field including Accounting Organizations and Society, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Accounting Auditing and Accountability Journal, and Organization Studies. She is an editor for British Accounting Review. To mobilize the impact of her work, she regularly organizes and facilitates workshops with cooperatives and community organizations.
