Biography
Ahmed is an International Trade and Economic lawyer. His research focus is on implementation and achievement of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as well as its relationship with existing regional economic communities and their further integration through developing regional value chains. He is considering how treaties in the form of international and regional trade frameworks are implemented beyond their obligations on paperin the market. In the African context, this synnergy has the potential to build economic development through globalization, trade, good governance and successful investment initiatives through North-South collaboration. Ahmed has been involved in a number of significant projects in industry, relevant to his research, especially on deepening regional integration. Most recently, he has been appointed to co-lead a team of trade law and policy experts in drafting a Rules of Origin Legislative Framework for Somalia, following the country's accession to the East African Community and the AfCFTA. Ahmed is also qualified as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with over 10 years post-qualification experience.
Research interests
Ahmed research is on international trade law in an African context. His thesis focuses on the relationship between the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and how it will interact with the Continent's regional economic communities (RECs). He is exploring how regional value chains can be used to streamline this relationship in an effective manner.
