Biography
Manoj is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol Law School. He holds a Ph.D. in Law from Queen’s University in Canada and LL.M. (Res.), LL.B., and B.A. (English Lit.) degrees from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia.
Manoj’s research examines legal questions from an interdisciplinary perspective. He draws particularly on the disciplines of sociology, history and political economy. At the moment, his main research project investigates how Britain thinks about, rationalises, and regulates labour migration, paying particular attention to how this has changed over time. He is also continuing to do research on the labour market experiences of migrant workers, and how state actors (e.g., labour agencies) and trade unions can improve outcomes.
Manoj has published his research in various leading law journals and reviews, including the Industrial Law Journal, International Journal of Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations, and the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review. His work also appears in several edited collections, such as the Research Handbook on Law, Movements and Social Change (Edward Elgar, 2023) and the Oxford Handbook of the Law of Work (OUP, 2024). He regularly writes for generalist publications.
He was recently a co-investigator on a Modern Slavery PEC/AHRC funded research project investigating visa conditions and enforcement practices in the agricultural and social care sectors (with researchers at the Universities of Leicester, Durham, York and Royal Holloway).
He currently sits on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Law in Context and co-convenes the ‘law and political economy’ stream of the Socio-Legal Studies Association. He is also a Steward of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association (2022-25).
