Teaching
Since 2015, I have been Head of Teaching for Primary Care at Bristol Medical School. During my tenure, the school’s Centre for Academic Primary Care has delivered a 185% increase in our provision of Primary Care placements for medical students - one of the highest in the UK. Unlike in most medical schools, offers to teach for us exceed demand. Sessional expansion has been matched by assured quality. For instance, in May 2023, GP3 students rated their enjoyment at an average of 4.71 on a 1-5 scale (RR 68%).
At medical school level, I am curriculum lead for Effective Consulting (EC) one of the UK’s most ambitious and comprehensive communication skills programmes, that I designed. EC is underpinned by the COGConnect training toolkit, designed to equip our graduates for 21st century medicine. I led on the design of COGConnect and its dissemination through scholarship. I am lead of the Art of Medicine helical theme which has pioneered the place of creative practice in student development as show-cased at the outofourheads.net website which I founded. I am also founder of our intercalated BA in Medical Humanities (2005-) and was its first programme director.
I chaired the committee that designed Student Choice for MB21 and have personally designed and delivered a dozen unique SCP courses since 2001. My current SCP focus is Leadership in the Wilderness which in May 2023 was the second most popular Y2 SCP in BMS. I am co-lead for sustainability for BMS and head of the Planetary Health and Sustainability helical theme which I founded. I am co-author of Sustainable Healthcare, a leading textbook in the field.3
External recognitions for my educational work include the HEA National Teaching Fellowship. The award, open to all (400,000+) HE staff, and currently held by only x10 other staff members in the university, is viewed as badge of honour for the whole institution.
