Research interests
I am a mixed methods academic GP with three main workstreams:
- Multiple long-term conditions
- Vaccine preventable respiratory infections
- Research inclusion
Workstream 1. Multiple long-term conditions
I’m almost four years into my five-year mixed methods PhD focused on unmet health needs of older housebound patients (completion date 28th February 2027).
Over the past nine years, I have developed expertise in treatment burden (the effort required of patients to look after their health). I developed and validated the Multimorbidity Treatment Burden Questionnaire (MTBQ; validation papers published in 2018 and 2024) and have co-authored its translation into nine languages.
Workstream 2. Vaccine preventable respiratory infections
I am the Co-Principal Investigator for the AvonCAP GP2 study, a £5.9 million industry-funded surveillance study of lower respiratory tract infections with over 4,000 consented participants, including underserved groups such as care home residents and ethnic minorities. The last participants were recruited in July 2024.
Workstream 3. Research inclusion
I have a keen interest in improving equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in primary care research and providing more opportunities for non-academic clinicians to take part in research. EDI is embedded in research I lead. I’m working to build research capacity and capability for underserved communities through three current roles:
- Founder, previous Chair and Senior Advisory Board member for the Primary care Academic Collaborative (PACT) – a UK wide networks with over 1200 members. I lead one of the PACT studies (the CHiP) study and have been a co-investigator for the three other PACT studies: Why Test, the Hidden Workload Study and Accessing Continuity (the current study).
- Research lead for GPs at the Deep End, Bristol - a network of 17 GP practices and 15 community organisations serving disadvantaged communities. I established the network, alongside two colleagues who co-lead the network, in April 2023. We have fantastic engagement from community organisations and clinicians from all 17 practices.
- Primary care settings lead for South-West Central Research Delivery Network.
