Research interests
I am a physical volcanologist, with interests in experimental modelling of a range of volcanic processes. My main focus of interest is in understanding the processes within pyroclastic density currents, and enabling the detailed interpretation of their deposits. This has implications for improved hazard modelling in active volcanic areas, and in improved interpretations of activity in the geological record.
I also have expertise in rock physics and the mechanics of deformation in volcanic materials, and how these relate to the 3D structure of volcanoes. I am particularly interested in how the mecahnical behaviour of volcanic sediments links to both the stability of volcanoes and the engineering and hazard challenges these might pose.

Description
Injecting gas into sandy materials enables them to flow freely. By controlling the amount of gas injected, and allowing flows to come to a halt, this project focussed on whether…Managing organisational unit
