Biography
Throughout this time, Lucy not only had a keen interest in human anatomy, but continued an ongoing passion for illustration, from both a historical and modern day perspective, and the many ways to visualise and communicate medical and anatomical information.
After graduating from her BSc, Lucy undertook an MSc in Medical Art at the University of Dundee, combining her interest in both specialities. Here she gained many skills in classical and more modern visualisation techniques, whilst retaining a particular interest in facial depictions and reconstructions, and public communication. She also worked for a time as a freelance illustrator for scientific articles.
Lucy has been teaching Anatomy since 2009 when she joined the University of Aberdeen as a prosector / demonstrator, and over 7 years becomings a lecturer, and also held the title of Licensed Teacher of Anatomy, working closely all things body donation related; from bequethal managers, families, the Inspector of Anatomy and the Scottish Government.
Lucy joined the University of Bristol in 2016, and continues to develop her passion for both art, head and neck anatomy, and the integration of artistic techniques into anatomy. Here she contributes to many of the schools degree programmes, postgraduate training, and the BDS professional programme, but most notably the BSc in Applied Anatomy, in gross anatomy, dissection, and visualisation units, and running research projects on historical facial reconstruction and depiction, life drawing in anatomical education and more.
In other roles, Lucy also works as Admissions Tutor and Senior Pastoral Tutor for the BSc Applied Anatomy degree programme.
She is a member of the Anatomical Society.
Research interests
Lucys research interest blend her passions for anatomy, history and art seamlessly - the use of artistic and illustrative methods and skills in learning complex anatomical structures, as well a communicating to various audiences from schools outreach to complex surgical planning.
Lucy’s current research focusses on the skeletal and skull collection within the School of Anatomy, with the aim of uncovering more about who our unknown anatomy subjects are and bringing the faces of such subjects to life to acknowledge and memorialise their contribution to the anatomical education of thousands of students passing through the doors of the Bristol dissection room.
Her research aims to bring the unknown faces of the dissection room to life, through a series of facial reconstructions utilising both anthropological and anatomical assessment, mixed with artistic skill, to create the closest possible scientific likenessof a past subjects whose skeletal remains are housed within the School. These unknown subjects memoralises the many unrecognised subjects and invaluable silent teachers on who’s shoulders we stand and stand as an effective memorial.
The long term aims of the wider project are to assess and catalogue the skull collection at Bristol, with particular interest in the historical pre HTA, pre records skulls within the School, with the hope to uncover more about who our unknown anatomy subjects are, and bringing further faces of our Bristol anatomy subjects to life; to acknowledge and memorialise their contribution to the anatomical education of thousands of students who have passed through the doors of the dissection room.

Teaching
She is the unit lead for the human anatomy units in year 2 of the BSc Applied Anatomy: ANAT20003 Thorax, Head and Neck in teaching block 1, and ANAT20002 Abdomen, Pelvis and Limbs in teaching block 2.
She is the deputy lead for the year 2 BSc Applied Anatomy unit ANAT20005 Anatomy by Dissection. This is the only compartive human and veterinary dissection course on any Anatomy Degree in the UK.
She leads the Illustration element of ANAT20006 "Visualising Anatomy Through Imaging" unit, teaching students the complex history of anatomy and art from 500BC to the modern day, discussing the changing ethics and attitudes towards dissection and public display, as well as science communication through illustrative techniques.
Lucy leads a number of interactive and innovative seminars for year 3 of the BSc Applied Anatomy and the intercalated iBSc in Functional and Clinical Anatomy - utilising hands on practical approaches to complex anatomical topics, such as the spine, and co-running a forensic anthropological facial reconstruction workshop. This has lead to her teaching being nominated in 2023 for an "Innovation in Teaching Bristol University Teaching Award"
Lucy also teaches on the MSc Dental Implantology course, as well as a number of other head and neck postgraduate clinical training courses for dental and facial surgeons.
