Biography
My interest in the physics of light began as an undergraduate at Oxford. I went on to complete a PhD in Physics at Imperial College London, working on spin and carrier dynamics in semiconductor quantum dots. I then took a career break as a Daiwa Scholar, before taking up a JSPS Research Fellowship at the University of Tokyo, working under Professor Yasuhiko Arakawa — known as the father of the quantum dot laser — in the Arakawa-Iwamoto Lab and the NanoQuine Co-Innovation Centre, where I also collaborated with NEC on advanced photonic device research.
At the University of Bristol, I lead a semiconductor photonics research group within the School of Electrical, Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering. My work focuses on designing and characterising novel semiconductor light sources, including VCSELs, PCSELs, and quantum dot lasers, with applications in quantum key distribution and quantum communications more broadly. I hold funding including a New Investigator Award from EPSRC, alongside industry-related funding from Innovate UK and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
I am a Senior Member of the IEEE and Treasurer of the Quantum Electronics and Photonics Group at the Institute of Physics. I hold several leadership roles at Bristol, including EEME REF Co-ordinator, and I have graduated seven PhD students and published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers.
