Biography
I graduated from the University of Bristol with a BSc in Neuroscience in 2007 before completing postgraduate medical training at the University of Warwick, graduating in 2011. Following this, I undertook Foundation and General Practice specialist training in the Severn Deanery, qualifying as a GP in 2016. I currently work in locum and out-of-hours general practice across the BNSSG region.
I joined the School of Anatomy at the University of Bristol in 2016, becoming a Lecturer in 2018. I was appointed Senior Lecturer in the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience in 2023.
My academic interests centre on the teaching of clinically-oriented biomedical sciences and their relevance to body function, disease, and medical & surgical practice. I have extensive experience in teaching neuroscience, physiology, pharmacology and anatomy across both undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical science courses, as well as all three professional programmes (medicine, dentistry and veterinary science). I supervise final-year BSc students in research projects involving experimental design, data collection and analysis.
Alongside my teaching, I contribute to pedagogical research and to public engagement with science initiatives, particularly where they intersect with my clinical interests. I am also an active science and health journalist, publishing widely in the media, and co-host the podcast Strange Health, which explores viral health trends, medical myths and scientific oddities.
My work is informed by both my scientific and medical training, with a particular emphasis on helping students understand the foundational role of the basic sciences in professional clinical practice.
