As a pre-diploma and diploma research student in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in renewable energy sources and environment, I have gained a lot of experience working on the production and characterization of nanostructured/composite materials used for energy applications at the Environmental Technology Laboratory of the University of Western Macedonia, Greece. More specifically, synthesis and structural-surface analysis of intermetallic compounds used as high performance permanent magnets was the subject of my last year’s diploma thesis. Working for four years as PhD researcher for the Interface Analysis Centre, my research focused on the surface investigation and mechanistic studies of uranium corrosion in mixed H2O-H2 systems, meeting the requirement to develop a more detailed understanding of uranium corrosion in storage environments, in order to implement better control and monitoring schemes for waste management. After receiving my PhD on November 2017, my research concentrated towards the industrial challenges around nuclear waste packaging (mainly ILW), storage and disposal. Understanding the complexity and combination of solutions required for addressing several challenges around the industry, I considered the use of robotics for nuclear applications an exciting field of research for my future studies. Environmental research, energy engineering, uranium corrosion, hydrogen storage, synthesis and/or characterization of materials used in energy applications and renewable energy sources are research topics that I am also extremely interested in for my long-term research studies.
