Dr Jon Fox from the Department of Sociology has been awarded a grant of £74,500 from the Economic and Social Research Council for research into the racism faced by Hungarian and Romanian migrant workers in the UK.

Dementia research in Bristol has received a major boost thanks to a grant of £320k. The funding will enable researchers at the University of Bristol to carry out detailed experimental investigations of how electrical signals in brain circuits are disturbed by tauopathy — an important pathological hallmark seen in the brains of sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias.

Dr Ranji Devadason from the Department of Sociology has been awarded a grant of £211,961 from the British Academy for her work on ‘entrepreneurs of globalisation’, people employed by multinational corporations and international NGOs who relocate for work.

Medical student Tehmina Bharucha has won the 2009 Peter Dunn Perinatal Bursary for best perinatal project.
