New report finds significantly larger proportion of unexplained infant deaths live in the most deprived neighbourhoods

With the current cost of living crisis, new evidence has found a significantly larger proportion of unexplained infant deaths were among children living in the most deprived neighbourhoods. The new report from England’s National Child Mortality Database (NCMD), led by the University of Bristol, shows 42% of unexplained infant deaths occurred in the most deprived neighbourhoods compared to 8% in the least deprived neighbourhoods.

Professor John Richard Thomas Colley died on 17 October aged 92. He was Professor of Public Health Medicine from 1976 until retirement in 1993, when he was appointed Emeritus Professor. His former colleague, Professor Michael Wadsworth (now Emeritus at University College London), offers an appreciation.
