Inaugural Student Teaching Awards celebrate exceptional educators

The University of Bristol’s first Student Teaching Awards took place this week, recognising and celebrating the staff and teams who make an outstanding contribution to teaching and the student experience.

Replacing the previous Bristol Teaching Awards, the awards have been co-created with Bristol Students’ Union, putting student voices at the heart of how excellence in education is recognised.

The awards celebrate both academic and professional services staff who go above and beyond to support student learning. From inspiring teaching to exceptional support, nominees were recognised for their clear and lasting impact on students.

This year’s winners included Muhao Du, Teaching Associate, University of Bristol Business School, who took home the Championing Student Voices Award for their ability to create a feeling of shared ownership over the learning experience.

Luke Woodbury, Technical Specialist, Science and Engineering Faculty Office, was given the Helping Hands Award for providing consistent guidance and making the unfamiliar feel achievable.

A defining feature of the Student Teaching Awards is that every nomination came directly from students. This year, more than 600 nominations were submitted.

Tansy Jessop, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students, said: “The past year has been a big one for the University, making it even more important that we take moments like this to celebrate the people at the heart of our community. These awards are a powerful reminder of the impact that kind of teaching has, and this year I’m delighted to see it recognised through the voices of our students.”

Sharan Khemlani, Postgraduate Education Officer at the Bristol SU, said: “What has been beautiful about this year is that students have been involved in every single stage of the process, from nominating to student-led shortlisting panels, to presenting the awards. I think the awards will continue to grow from here.”

Mia Stevens, Undergraduate Education Officer at the Bristol SU, said: “Students move through University quite quickly, and don’t always get the chance to recognise and celebrate the work of their teachers.

To have a whole event dedicated to that, where students can take the time to submit a nomination and see the teachers who have really helped and inspired them have their moment of celebration is so important.”

The awards ceremony also demonstrated the creativity and talent of the student community, with performances from the String Quartet Society and the Bristol University Latin American and Ballroom Dancing Society.
