Professor Gregor McLennan

The University of Bristol is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of Professor Gregor McLennan. A distinguished scholar and valued colleague, he made an outstanding contribution to sociological thought and to the academic community here at the University of Bristol and around the world.

Gregor was an undergradute at the University of Bristol, before he moved to the Birmingham for his PhD, and went on to become an internationally respected academic in the fields of social theory, postcolonial and postsecular thought.

He rejoined the University of Bristol in 1997 as the Established Chair in Sociology and held numerous leadership roles as Head of the Department of Sociology, Head of School for Sociology, Politics and International Studies, Director of the University's Institute of Advanced Studies, and Warden of Goldney Hall.

His intellectual generosity, rigour, and commitment to public debate left a lasting impact on students, peers, and the wider discipline. He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him at the University of Bristol and beyond. An obituary will be published here in due course.
