The Wills Memorial Building welcomed hundreds of staff on Wednesday, where shortlisted nominees from across the University were thanked for their contribution to students’ learning.
A record-breaking 1,400 nominations were submitted for the awards, surpassing all previous years.
Tansy Jessop, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education and Students, said that this was “testimony to the creativity and enthusiasm of colleagues in their dedication to learning and the student experience.”
The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Education, presented to one category winner in recognition of their exceptional contributions, was awarded to Ali van den Berg, Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Bristol Dental School. Ali received commendation for her warmth and compassion, as well as her ability to foster students' clinical confidence and professional growth.
On being awarded, Ali said: “I value the students, and it is so rewarding to watch them develop and grow in confidence”.
“I’m very grateful and so touched that so many students and staff nominated me. I am very proud of what the students have achieved and lucky to work in an environment where I am supported and valued”.
The Students’ Union was represented by Mia Stevens and Gurvin Chopra, SU officers who served as Masters of Ceremonies. The evening was enriched by performances from the Indian Classical Performing Arts Society and Johnny Clavo Yamahuchi from the Magic Society, alongside knitted flowers from the Knitting Society.
Winning staff members were presented with framed certificates, and the wildflower garden at Royal Fort Gardens is dedicated annually to the year’s winners. Each winner is also given a selection of the seeds sown in the garden.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Professor Judith Squires, said the Bristol Teaching Awards were the “perfect opportunity to celebrate those who are working tirelessly to enhance student learning and the wider student experience”.
“The awards are a recognition by colleagues and students of the positive impact made by staff across our community. Thank you all for being exceptional”.
