Press release issued: 4 June 2025

The University of Bristol and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology [HKUST] have signed an agreement that will formalise their partnership, strengthening research and academic collaboration between the two institutions.

Professor Evelyn Welch, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol met with senior academics from HKUST recently to sign a memorandum of understanding which will see Bristol become the first UK university to be part of HKUST’s Global Knowledge Network, a joint research seed grant programme which aims to amplify the impact of international academic exchange and research partnerships.

The University of Bristol has had a long-standing relationship with HKUST for two decades, built on a student exchange with the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and undergraduate to postgraduate progression pathways in Life Sciences. In addition, academics at both institutions have co-authored 50 papers in a range of disciplines including Physics, Astronomy, Neuroscience and Medicines.

The signing of the agreement strengthens this partnership with more academics from both institutions able to spend time at the other to exchange and ignite ideas for tangible research collaborations. It is expected this will lead to more joint publications, research grants and a deeper academic relationship between Bristol and HKUST. Discussions also took place around co-creating new degree programmes, expanding student exchange agreements and initiatives to support graduate employability.

Professor Welch said: “This is the first time Bristol has signed an agreement like this and represents a landmark moment for us in terms of how we engage with our partners globally. This match funded staff exchange is part of the Global Knowledge Network scheme at HKUST, which includes several world leading universities. We are delighted to be the first UK partner to join their network. We expect this agreement will deliver a step change in terms of research output between our two research intensive institutions.”

Professor Yike Guo, Provost at HKUST, added: “HKUST is proud to collaborate with the University of Bristol in advancing joint research through our Global Knowledge Network. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to fostering impactful academic collaboration, driving innovation, and addressing pressing international issues through interdisciplinary expertise. By connecting talent and resources across institutions, we aim to create knowledge that transcends borders and contributes to meaningful discoveries for the betterment of society.”
