University of Bristol response to disorder in the city centre

22 March 2021

Statement from Professor Hugh Brady, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, in response to the disorder and violence in Bristol city centre last night.

"We strongly condemn the violence that took place yesterday evening (21 March) in Bristol city centre at the end of the 'Kill The Bill' protest. The University stands with our Mayor and Bristol City Council in disgust at the minority of protestors who turned a peaceful protest into a violent ending where police officers were injured, property damaged, and our city in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

"We would like to thank those members of our staff who worked tirelessly yesterday and today to assist our students, ensuring their safety and offering support. We recognise that yesterday's events will give some people cause for concern, and urge all members of the University community to utilise our wellbeing support if needed.

"We also want to thank the Avon and Somerset Police for their dedication and commitment to our city and community. Our thoughts go out to all the police officers injured and we wish them a speedy recovery.

"In our role as educators, researchers, and civic leaders, we must look to tangible and inclusive ways to face our challenges as a society and community. Violence is not the way, and does not reflect the Bristol community."
