Dr Wookey is probably best known for his work on the region of the lowermost mantle known as D" which marks the Earth's most dramatic interface, the core-mantle boundary. Knowledge of the structure and dynamics of this region has far-reaching consequences for understanding a range of phenomena, including the style of mantle convection, mantle mineralogy, Earth's early evolution, and issues affecting core convection and the Earth's magnetic field.
The Award citation states that Dr Wookey’s ‘innovative work on seismological data and his cross-disciplinary research collaborations have improved our understanding of deep mantle possibilities.
‘[He] has already made a broad impact on the Earth interior research community at a very early stage of his scientific career [...] this makes him a worthy recipient of the RAS Fowler Award.’
