Think before you bin

Look out for the new-style, dual-purpose litter bins around the University precinct

17 February 2010

The University has introduced several new, dual-purpose, street bins around the precinct.

Ten new combined litter bins have been installed, replacing the older landfill-only bins in busy locations such as outside the Wills Memorial Building and the Students’ Union. The idea is gradually to replace all of the old-style street bins.

The project is managed through Grounds and Gardens in conjunction with Sustainability and it is hoped that the new bins will capture a tonne of good-quality recyclable material every year. The different waste materials will be collected from the bins at the same time, keeping vehicle movements and emissions to a minimum.

Rose Rooney, Sustainability Manager (Waste and Environmental Management System), said: ‘This new initiative is an important step in the University’s attempt to reach its target for diversion of waste to landfill to 30% by 2016. We all have responsibility for the environment and it’s easier to make a difference if departments across the University work in partnership towards the same goal.’
