Centre for Deaf Studies celebrates 30th year

The University’s Centre for Deaf Studies – Europe’s first academic institution to concentrate solely on research and education that aims to benefit the Deaf community – is 30 years old next month.

The Centre is to mark this special occasion with a weekend of events from 26-27 September, including a conference that will discuss the history and future of the academic discipline of Deaf Studies, looking at the developments that have been made, and those that are shaping the field today. Resident lecturers, Professor Jim Kyle and Dr Paddy Ladd, will present keynote addresses, and invited speakers include:

Professor Ben Bahan, Chair of the Department of Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University
Dr Alys Young, Professor of Social Work Education and Research at University of Manchester
Professor Bencie Woll, Director of the Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL) at University College London
Dr Christopher Stone, University of Bristol alumnus, researcher at DCAL, and National Chair of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters.
