The University of Bristol will hold a Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony this Monday 28 January. The ceremony, to mark the anniversary of the liberation of the extermination and concentration camps, will commemorate the victims and survivors of one of the worst acts of inhumanity and genocide committed in modern history.

The commemorative service, organised by the University's Multifaith Chaplaincy, will be an interactive ceremony with music, poems, prayers and readings, including a silence. The Lord Mayor of Bristol will also be in attendance. The genocide commemoration ceremony entitled ‘Remember the Past to Change the Present’ will be held at the Victoria Rooms (Portico), Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol at 1.15 pm.

A film and speaker exploring the Darfur tragedy and how each of us can help, entitled ‘Genocide Today’, will be held at 7.30 pm in the Students’ Union, Queen’s Road, Bristol to close the event.

Rabbi Natan Levy, Orthodox Jewish Chaplain at Bristol University’s Chaplaincy and ceremony organisers, said: “The theme of this year’s commemoration is ‘remember, reflect, react’. The day will start with an honest look at the past, finding hope in the sharing of stories and music, and then channeling this communal experience into community wide and effective action in the evening.”
