Ellen Malos was also a founding member of the Violence Against Women Research Group, now the Violence Against Women Research Group, which carries out a wide range of research into the impact of domestic violence on women and their children and looks at the implications for law, policy and practical services in local, national and international contexts. She worked as a researcher and teacher at Bristol for more than 20 years, retiring from her post as Senior Lecturer in 2002. In 2006, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the University.

Prior to coming to the University, Ellen was actively involved with the Women’s Aid movement in working to develop effective support across a range of services. Much of her current research, in conjunction with Professor Gill Hague, is carried out in consultation with the UK women’s aid federations.

Professor Hague said: ‘We are delighted that Next Link has decided to name its new refuge after Ellen. She has made an enormous contribution to domestic violence services and refuges in Bristol over the past 35 years –  in fact the first refuge in Bristol was in her own home. This is therefore a moving and lasting tribute to all her hard work and commitment.’
