Bristol University’s 81st Annual RAG (Raising and Giving) Procession will hit the streets this Saturday [February 18]. Up to 150 student volunteers will be taking part in the procession and community fair at Castle Park, to help raise money for local Bristol charities.  RAG has raised over £90,000 for charity to date.

Taking part in the themed procession will be a Chinese Lion Troupe, GWR Black Thunders, a selection of American trucks, Harley Davidson’s, army vehicles and Mini Coopers together with a variety of floats decorated by student halls of residences and societies. There will also be a live performance by band Jazz Funk Soul on the Reggae Society’s float.

The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Peter Abraham, will open the Procession on the Downs, Parry’s Lane, at 1 pm.  The floats will then proceed down Whiteladies Road to the Triangle, down Park Street and around Broadmead before making their way up Park Street to finish at the Students’ Union on Queen’s Road.

At the same time families are invited to sample the delights of a community fair in Castle Park from 1 to 4 pm where there will be a barbeque and a variety of entertainment on offer.  Entertainments include a bouncy castle, face painting, a coconut shy, tombola, circus tricks and a Beat the Goalie stand.

Huda Gamil, RAG Chair, said: “At this current moment in time we have raised over £90,000 for charity.  The procession has been an annual tradition for over 80 years and will mark the start of RAG Week.

“RAG Week, kindly sponsored by Deloitte for the second year running, consists of 30 different activities over nine days, designed to raise as much money as possible for local charities. Last year we raised a record-breaking £15,000. We hope to beat that this year!”
