Everyone knows that exercise is good for you.  But what are the benefits and is it important to lead an active lifestyle?  That is the subject of a free public lecture by two of the world’s leading exercise scientists hosted by Bristol University next week.

Physical inactivity: the biggest public health problem of the 21st century, will be given by Professor Steven Blair, President and Chief Executive Officer at The Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas.

His lecture will focus on evidence that a low level of fitness is a strong predictor of mortality.  And that applies to all population groups.

Professor Russ Pate, Associate Dean for Research in the School of Public Health and Professor of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina, will talk about Physical activity for obesity prevention in youth.

He will explore physical fitness in children to prevent childhood obesity and the health implications of physical activity.

Professor Blair said: “Being active and healthy comes in all shapes and sizes.  It is important to stop regarding weight as the be all and end all.

“A fat person who is fit is at much lower risk of mortality than people who are thin and unfit.”

The public lecture will take place at the Enderby Lecture Theatre, H H Wills Physics Laboratory, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol, on Wednesday, February 15 at 5 pm.  The lecture is free but space is limited, to book contact 0117 331 1147.
